| Today is my son Holden's 18th birthday...does that mean I'm getting old?I'm going to start with this random thought. Everytime my kids have a birthday I tease them about "all the pain I was in around this time" the day before their birthday. With my oldest this rings the truest...not because I had a difficult delivery (I didn't) but because I was a single mom when I had him. Looking back, I realize that I had no idea what I was in for...and that was probably for the best.
The night before Holden was born I labored alone in my tiny 2 bedroom duplex, not wanting to call my mom too early. My contractions were 5 minutes apart and would send me doubling over into a ball on the carpet or in a chair...and then I would walk. The thought of this makes me weepy because I realize that I've always been a pretty brave person (and this is not to pat myself on the back). Why wasn't I terrified or why didn't I ask to stay at my parent's house for the night? I've always had an independent streak in me and I hate to ask for help. It's one of my many flaws.
I called my mom sometime around 6am and we were at the hospital an hour later, but Holden wasn't born until 5:01pm. I'll never forget that moment when he was placed in my arms. While he only weighed 6 lbs 14 ozs I could feel the weight of the world right there in my arms. This child would change my life in ways I never expected.
Holden has made parenting seem easy. While he looks like any other teenager, there's something quite special about him. He's caring, sensitive, respectful, considerate, honest, outgoing, confident and hard working. If I could clone him I would. I'm a lucky mom today...my baby is turning 18 and I'm feeling a deep sense of gratitude and relief. Is he really an adult now? I know my job as a parent will never end, no matter how old he gets, but it's almost as if we hold our breath waiting for them to turn 18 (mind you he still has to graduate from HS next year). Maybe then I'll be able to exhale.

| Working hard on all the updates for the website!I'm sure you've noticed that there are sections of www.AZActiveKids.com that are a bit out of date. Well, I've been working hard this week (and more next week) to get it fully updated. We're still in the process of figuring out the calendar situation (it will return someday soon). I must say that it's been a tough transition handing over the reigns to the crew at www.Inetwerx.com. Hannah's done an incredible job of desiphering all my emails and completing the updates for me...it's a lot of work to say the least!
So, check out the site often and please...if you're looking for internet geniuses, search engine optimization specialists, web designers, etc. contact Joe or Hannah at www.Inetwerx.com and they'll take good care of you! They've been a Godsend to this site! | I'm adding a new page soon and need your help! Do you love your pediatrician, pediatric dentist, OBGYN, doula, etc. I'm adding a "Find a Doctor/Dentist" page.I've been brainstorming on ideas for the site and I realized that when you have children or you move to a new town, one of the toughest things is to find a Dr. or Dentist that you like. Don't get me started on finding a good OB! I'd love to get your feedback on your relationships with your health professionals...I value your opinions. I'll be contacting these Dr's about joining the AZActiveKids site and will certainly mention who recommended them. This will be a fee based page to help keep the site going (gotta pay those expenses) and I think it'll be a perfect fit for the site. If you know the web address that'll be helpful too. Send me your feedback at azactivekids@hotmail.com |

| AZ Active Kids Fan Page on Facebook!Ok, for all you parents who are out there reconnecting with old friends from high school and college, take some time to add the AZ Active Kids Fan Page to your FB profile. I've found it really easy to post stuff on there that I don't always get a chance to get posted on the website or through newsletters. I also think this is a perfect avenue for parents to share their ideas and such with others. I get some great tips from some of you...and my inbox on my email is always jam packed. This is just another option for sharing. | Check out my nature blog!I've never been someone who's good about writing in a journal, but that's basically what I'm trying to do now. I know I mentioned a blog before, but I had to change over to blogger (because it was easier to figure out). I share stories from around our house and more. http://www.adventurousazmom.blogspot.com/ |

| Seriously, how did I forget to include the Desert Botanical Garden on the site? I love this place! You've gotta check out their next Butterfly Pavillion.I have to share this email I received this week from the Early Childhood Program Manager at DBG:
"Hi Holly, I just came across your website and am so happy I did! Through this website and your blog it looks like you do amazing things with your family and what a great resource for parents not only in the valley but statewide. I’m wondering if you would be willing to add Desert Botanical Garden to your Museums section." I aso teach our preschool program for children ages 3-5 and a caregiver at the Garden. It is a science – enrichment program that focuses on learning about our Sonoran Desert backyard and connecting children and their families to the nature that is in their backyard. Would you be willing to list this program under your preschool section? If you would like more information you can visit our website at www.dbg.org/seedlings
We also have many other children and family programs that support your mission, often with a focus on getting families outdoors. Visit our website for the calendar of events. www.dbg.org
