AZ Active Kids Newsletter July 9, 2009

 yosemiteHello Active Parents!
I know you probably think I've fallen off the face of the earth and from the looks of this photo it would seem possible, haha.  This photo was taken in Yosemite National Park and I think it's my favorite photo so far.

I left town with my two youngest sons (Sammy 9 & Jack 6) on June 2nd and we've enjoyed some of the most wonderful adventures together!  We've been to Las Vegas (one night), Sequoia National Monument, Yosemite NP, Sunset Beach SP (near Monterey), San Francisco, Lake Tahoe/Reno, Salt Lake City, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Vail, and now Wichita, KS!  We tent camped a total of 14 nights, spent 4 nights in hotels and one night with friends before arriving in my hometown of Wichita where we've been staying with my parents for 2 1/2 weeks.  My little sister had her first child (Gavin) on Sat. June 27th and I was fortunate enough to witness the birth (and photograph it which was a huge highlight for me).

My husband just arrived a few days ago for a visit since he's been rather lonely at home (our teenage son has an active social life and is working a lot this summer).  It sucks that my husband's had to work, but next summer he swears he'll schedule time to join us on some of our adventures.  The kids are already making requests for places to visit and Sammy even suggested that we try to visit EVERY National Park before he graduates from high school.  Wow, not sure about that one, but it's a wonderful goal for a lifetime!!!

I hope that somehow our trip might inspire other parents to get out exploring nature with your children whether it's in your own backyard, in one of the regional parks around Phoenix, one of Arizona's many National Parks or maybe a beautiful forest.  We're so fortunate to have access to so many natural areas in AZ and such drastically changing landscapes within hours of our large city.  Load up the kids and head for cooler weather in the high country...it's really that easy!  If you can't afford hotels, borrow or purchase a tent and visit one of the many campgrounds.  You'll be amazed out how entertained your children will be!!  Visit the sites below to find regional campsites or join us on one of our future group campouts through www.AZActiveKids.com!

I am completely impressed by the offering of classes, workshops and activies offered at this wonderful education center!  I only wish that my family lived closer so we could take advantage of these educational opportunities on a regular basis!  For those living in the area, please visit their website for more information.  And for the rest of us...maybe we'll just have to make a drive out there every now and then!!!  Enjoy!

Usery Mountain Regional Park
Educational Opportunities for families!

Upcoming Activies:
  • Animal Hide & Seek Flashlight Walk (7/10)
  • Creature Feature:  Movies in the Park every Wed. morning at 10am on the giant indoor screen (see below)
  • Super Scorpion Search (7/18)
Located on the Valley's east side, this park takes in 3,648 acres set at the western end of the Goldfield Mountains, adjacent to the Tonto National Forest. The park contains a large variety of plants and animals that call the lower Sonoran Desert home.

Along the most popular feature of the park, the Wind Cave Trail, water seeps from the roof of the alcove to support hanging gardens of Rock Daisy. The Wind Cave is formed at the boundary between the volcanic tuff and granite on Pass Mountain. Breathtaking views from this 2,840-foot elevation are offered to all visitors.

---Families, are you looking for something cool to do this summer? Grab a mat, pillow, or blanket, and spend the morning watching a movie on a giant screen inside our new Nature Center! We will feature a different movie each Wednesday from July 1-August 5. The movies are family-friendly and fun for all ages. A short ranger-led nature program that ties into the movie will also be provided. Concessions will be available for purchase, however you are welcome to bring your own food and beverages - no glass containers, please. Today's movie: "Bolt" is about a dog that is more than a man's best friend - he's an action hero - or so he thinks! Join us as we cheer this daredevil on as he tries to find his way home with the help of his newfound companions, a brash cat and an over-eager hamster.

Parks and Recreation

Be sure to check out all the other regional parks in the Phoenix area.  Many feature indoor movies (Estrella, Cave Creek and Usery), twilight hikes and other wonderfully educational activies for families all for a very reasonable park entrance fee (per vehicle, not per person).  Consider purchasing an annual pass for $75 if you plan to visit often, especially if you enjoy hiking.  I purchase one each fall because I love to hike at Cave Creek Regional Park near my home.
